There are many ways to relax during a beautiful summer day; a nice BBQ, sports and for those bold enough to have an amazing time, outdoor movie theaters. Unfortunately, setting up an outdoor movie theater isn’t as simple as setting up a grill or whipping out some baseball bats, there are a particular setup and equipment you’ll need. In today’s post, we are going to show you how to turn your backyard into a movie theater.

1. The Essentials

The core components you will need to create your home outdoor cinema are a media player (we usually recommend a laptop), projector, a large outdoor screen, speakers and an awesome movie to play. Since most people don’t have a high-quality projector laying around, the most cost-effective and low maintenance way of setting everything up would be renting the equipment you need from experts who understand how it works and how to properly set it up. If you want a truly cinematic experience, consider renting a high-quality projector.

One of the first things to consider when looking for quality are lumens, the minimum is about 2,000 lumens for the projector to be effective on a bigger screen. Another factor to consider is whether the projector has electronic keystone controls that adjust the angle of the projector in relation to the screen, which is more common in lower-end projectors, or more manual controls that allow you to adjust distortion which you see in higher-end cinema projectors. Aspect ratio also matters but isn’t a deal-breaker, a 16:9 aspect ratio is the ideal to create a cinematic feel. Your choice should be based on how big you want to go with the experience, putting an HDTV in your backyard will not create a cinematic experience but you also don’t have to break the bank when choosing a quality projector to get the job done. Once you find the ideal projector, the first thing you want to do is make sure your laptop has the proper inputs and outputs to work with your ideal projector. Be sure to also consider if you need any adaptors as well.

Surprisingly, one of the most complex aspects of setting up your outdoor theater is ensuring you have the proper sound system. While you may be able to get away with using powerful blue-tooth speakers with a really small screen, when it comes to an outdoor theater you may want to consider renting a more powerful surround system or a more powerful speaker that can give you that epic sound level you hear in the movie theaters. The same applies to the screen you choose, do you want a simple living room in the backyard or a true movie theater experience? Renting a large screen doesn’t have to be very expensive and the size should also be based on how many people will be enjoying this home theater. If it is 50+, you will definitely want to consider using a 20+ foot screen. The best way to save money when renting all of these different types of equipment is to rent them in packages. We offer affordable outdoor movie screen rental packages that can give you a memorable movie experience at your next family reunion or party with friends while being able to accommodate your budget.

Throwing an epic movie night (or week) at your house doesn’t have to be super complex or expensive. You can create the true home movie experience on an affordable budget while maintaining the level of quality you’d expect from a more professional theater.
